Windstorm aftermath

carport.jpg
The weather reports yesterday said that Saturday's wind gusts got over 70 mph. The aftermath is all around. One of the plastic globes blew off of the lamp post in my front yard and was nowhere to be found. I figured it rolled down the street a block to where our street ends in a T capped by a chain link fence. I expected to find my globe pinned to the fence by a bunch of tumbleweeds. What I found was the fence laying flat, the poles bent at right angles to the ground. The same thing happened to the fence on the other side of the field so my globe is somewhere between here and Wichita Falls.

Another Windy Day in Lubbock

Winds today are 45mph+ with gusts to 65. Just looking out the window, watching parts of New Mexico head toward Dallas.

The fish have grown nicely over the winter. I hadn't known how they would fare but it has been nicely.

Toilet tweaking

Since we moved into the house about a year ago the toilets had exhibited half-hearted flushing. Multiple flushes hadn't yielded better results, in fact the only thing that helped was pouring an extra 1/2 gallon of water into the bowl during the flush. I had adjusted the tank water level and tested and replaced each of the components, all to no avail. I googled and none of the suggested remedies I found had worked. I was discussing my latest theory with Kirk when he told me his. He said he thought the hole at the front of the well at the bottom of the bowl was not putting out a sufficient flow of water during the flush. I told him I would check it out. I did and never went on to my theory because he was right.
When I put my pinkie into the hole it was almost entirely blocked. Lubbock has very hard water, high in mineral content and the minerals had built up to almost completely obstruct the opening. I used an icepick to clear the obstruction, working carefully so as not to chip the porcelain. Voila! Both of our toilets now flush perfectly. I thought I would post this for those who had been similarly afflicted.
PS: Now that I knew what I was looking for, I went back to google and found that well down in the slow toilet solutions, someone had listed this one. I just hadn't searched deep enough.

Robo-boy

Jean and I went to Little Red Riding Hood nursery this morning to shop and photograph plants for her Orchids and Violets blog. This young man was wiling away his time playing with his new remote-control robot.

Vanquishing of the virus

I believe that this weekend marks the end of my concessions to the flu. There is only the slightest vestige of a cough and though I slept more than normal this weekend I had both the energy and the inclination to be up and about doing projects at a normal level. When you consider that I had my first symptoms on December 27th it has been a long bout indeed. Jean got it a little over 2 weeks after me so she is still on the way back but it was some nasty stuff.
I apologize for the scarcity of posts but I expect I will be closer to my talkative self in the days ahead. Its good to be back.

Beautiful Weather

One of the things I love about Lubbock weather is the mildness of the winters. We get winters and, at an altitude of over 3000 feet we occasionally get snow, but the average high in January is 52 which means for every day when the high is in the thirties we are going to have a day when it is in the sixties or seventies so the cold is not so unrelenting as it is further north. The past few days have been of this warmer sort, getting to 77 yesterday.
When I lived in Maine I noticed that I started tensing up for winter about November and didn't let up until March. Here there is a breath of spring like weather every couple of weeks so we never really get locked into the winter doldrums.

Learn CPR Online

I saw a great use of the internet this morning. The University of Washington is providing demonstrations, including video, on how to administer cpr and aid for choking victims. There are instructions for adults, children and infants. Link (via Lifehacker and dumb little man).
