Thoughts of Tommy

tommy.jpg

Last Sunday night my nephew Tommy Yugovich was savagely beaten and has since been unconscious in surgical intensive care at UMC in Lubbock. Our love and prayers go out to Tommy and any positive thoughts and prayers you might wish to add would no doubt be appreciated by his family.

Tommy's progress can be followed here.

The Perils of Equipment Unfamiliarity

A while back I had broken the blade of my keychain swiss army knife cutting open a heavy cardboard carton. Though it is guaranteed, I had been thinking about a replacement and had settled on a leatherman squirt E4 which I have been carrying for a couple of weeks now. The way it opens and the shape of the blade are unfamiliar to me but I have been getting to know them. Today I was opening one of those packages hermetically sealed in clear, heavy plastic and pulled out the blade on my new leatherman to cut it open. In my unfamiliarity I held it backwards the blade closed on my right index finger, cutting it open instead. So this evening, thirteen stitches later, I am typing with my right hand splinted in a permanent point (or "L" for Loser). There was no permanent damage and I am on twice daily doses of antibiotics and humility as I learn temporary nine-finger touch typing.

Here They Come!

The plum trees are the first to put out blossoms this year, though most of the others are swelling in anticipation.

Eclipse Down the Street

The tail end of tonight's lunar eclipse was visible in Lubbock just at moonrise. We went out and I took a picture. We tried the high dynamic range (HDR) technique that allowed us to capture a lot of the range of the scene.
