White Christmas in Lubbock

We awoke on Christmas eve with 3-4 inches of the fluffy white stuff. It only got to 32 yesterday so much of it is still here and the roads got crusty overnight. I think I'll mostly stay in today. We'll start cooking Christmas dinner in about an hour. Merry Christmas to all.

Full and Festive Fourth

My 4th weekend was full and productive. I spent Friday getting ready for the Lubbock Democratic Party presence at 4th on Broadway: moving tables, getting helium tanks and the like. Made a brief produce run to Amy's Sunburst market. Friday was Angela's birthday so Lonie and I took her to see the Buddy Holly retrospective, link.
Saturday, I manned the Democratic fort at 4th on Broadway, link. After a day outdoors, I spent the evening in the air conditioning watching episodes of Foyle's War. Sunday was church, hauling back 4th stuff to Democratic HQ and returning helium tanks followed by a wedding. The evening was spent home resting and doing laundry.

Anniversary

It was 28 years ago today that Jean and I married. Being who we are, we had three ceremonies. We had a spiritual ceremony with just the two of us. We had a civil ceremony with a justice of the peace and we had a celebration with friends. That day formalized the pivotal and most important juncture of my life. I am so grateful and I miss her so.

A Normal, Week Ending in a Holiday

This has been a fairly normal week. Tuesday I dropped by the union hall to teach others how to post to the Union website I had built and Tuesday evening was the Democratic Party Executive Committee meeting followed by a Public Relations committee meeting which I chair. We had a bit of an issue because someone had set up a forum which had erupted as forums frequently did. The problem was that this one had been set up under the party banner, so that had to be fixed and was.
Wednesday night I facilitated the Explorations class at the Unity church. We started this in April and it had been fun and interesting. It is a survey of spiritual and metaphysical topics as they apply to the lives we wish to live, with a new topic each month. March was energy work. April was health and healing. In May we are covering relationships and relating to others and we decided that June will be Astrology.
The relationship discussion has been interesting. Last week we covered freedom in relating and balancing freedom with the responsibilities and accomodations of relationship. We particularly focused on the importance of the difference in perspective between focusing of freedom to do or be something and the freedom from something or someone. The Unity church has been good for me at this juncture. I have been active in the church service and some social activities and have been singing. I had not sung publicly since high school and it has been enjoyable and rewarding. I wonder if I might enjoy voice lessons, just for the fun of it.
Anyway, that is being my week, along with watering the trees and flowers and mowing the yard. I have not yet decided how I am going to spend the extra day I get this weekend. My sights are set on a 5 day weekend I am taking June 6-10. Kirk and I are going on a camping and sightseeing journey through the hill country with our friend Lonie.

Reemergence

It just registered how seldom I had blogged since Jean's illness. I am adjusting to a life without her. I have been keeping busy. Work fills my weekdays and I have been active in the Unity Church. This wonderful group of people and their friendship have been an anchor in what would otherwise have been far too unsettled a sea. I have been singing (hadn't sung publicly since high school) and I am leading a Wednesday night workshop in spiritual and metaphysical exploration and development. Keeping busy has given me a space for recovering from the sorrow of Jean's loss and allowed the ragged edges of my wounded heart to begin to heal. The fellowship of good people has allowed me a pleasant and rewarding place to focus my thoughts and my energies and I am grateful.
Kirk and Chloe are doing well. We are off this morning to see Star Trek and tonight is their uncle Matt's birthday so we are then to Matt's this evening to celebrate.

3-day Weekend

Each month I schedule a long weekend for my sanity. This one delightfully snuck up on me.

If enough people write congressmen and senators and tell them to support the Employee Free Choice Act then more people will have unions and enough jobs, benefits and paid time off to maintain their sanity.

The Gathering of Hope

The first Sunday evening of each month a group of people who believe in holistic living gather in Lubbock to share ideas and a potluck supper. I was introduced to this gathering in January, though it has been going on for almost 2 years. Sunday was my second visit and it just keeps getting better. This month I was excited to meet Amy Jones whose family runs Sunburst Farms and Market at 88th and MLK in Lubbock. I can hardly wait to sample their healthy, locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Lubbock Art Walk

This being the first Friday of the Month, it was the Lubbock Art Walk. Some members of the Unity Church invited me to join them and it was delightful. All of the museums and art galleries are open and people are out in vast numbers taking in the art and the wine and the cheese. It was a pleasure.
